And since I'm at it I will also make this a Defriending Amnesty Day, as people call it. That day is actually on all the time in this journal, but as much as I use this journal for fannish stuff I also use it a lot for serious business too, and since I get emotional over stuff that serious business isn't going to go away. So if that's not what you're into then that's okay by me. (Just as a note, this wasn't inspired by anything specific. Just thought I'd make some stuff clear.)

Yesterday, the news were saying that the attack was just a thoughtless attack and there was probably no hate behind it (WTF), but today people have come to their senses and it's being investigated as a hate crime. At least twenty people were affected, including children, and it was the first attack of its kind in Finland. All info from this article (in Finnish again), which includes a picture. About which I have this to say: That much smoke and the attack was just a thoughtless one-time thing? Please!

I've been reading news about what's been going on at Prides this year, and maybe I just haven't paid enough attention to things (very possible since I tend to stick my head in the sand), but it seems like there was a lot more violence going on this year than the last, and I wondered if that was going to show in Finland too. How sad that I was proved right.

ETA: It's actually over thirty victims, including a 1-year old child, and at least five more people yet have to be caught. The police describe it as carefully planned attack now, though really, gas in the face. How can an attack like that not be deliberately done?

Today there was a Pride Parade in Helsinki (which I didn't directly participate this time, although I helped out as a volunteer), and during the parade the participants were attacked with pepper gas and smoke bombs. Apparently the people responsible were caught trying to hide the spray, but FUCKING HELL. A Finnish article here, and of course the first comment belongs to a whiner who feels it's awful that they had to sit in a streetcar decorated by rainbow flaqs.

Apparently, there is a doctor in Florida who is giving women hormone treatments so that they won't have homo- or bisexual or otherwise "unfeminine" daughters. Because you know, girls who don't want men or children or want careers that are "masculine" area a threat to our society and you know, these people need to catch a fire from their hate right now.

ETA: On the other hand if you want to see good Christians, here are some. How sad is the rarity of them?

Awfulness

Sonoma County CA separates elderly gay couple and sells their home. (Article doesn't seem to be available at the moment, but I re-posted the contents in this post.)

I also commented about this to [livejournal.com profile] rosehiptea in her post, and she pointed out that since gay marriages are illegal in California this could happen to a lot more people. Maybe even marriage isn't enough to prevent this kind of crap from happening, but maybe it would help if these kind of rights weren't taken away in the first place. Or if we didn't question the right to these rights at all. Wouldn't it be great if it was so?!

Oh hell no

Law that prohibits "promoting homosexuality" will come into power next week in Lithuania. Needless to say this scares the living crap out of me.

Will post the meme responses soon, but since I'm all about the unfunny...

The Fails )
bofoddity: (Default)
If anybody is wondering why #amazonfail matters so much, this article at AfterEllen sums it up. As for me, I can't put into words how much it hurts to see what comes when you type up 'homosexuality' in the search field.

Sorry if this feels like spam, but this is personal.
bofoddity: (Default)
Maybe this has changed by the time I'm posting this, but at some point the first thing that showed up when you searched with the word 'homosexuality' was "The Parent's Guide to Preventing Homosexuality".

WHAT.

Here is the full list of books that have been removed. Aside from LGBT-books, several books about feminism have also been removed, Kate Bornstein's "Hello Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks and Other Outlaws" has also been removed.

Because yes, the most important thing that will keep our children safe is to take away something that may help them NOT to commit suicide. I'm sure both my teenager and adult selves would have been extremely grateful about this.

Smart Bitches Trashy Books suggested google bombing Amazon Rank. My journal shouldn't be indexed, but I'll do it anyway.

Amazon Rank.

Of course, Amazon is now claiming it was a glitch. LOL.

eta: Is Amazon Homophobic? reveals this has been going on for a while already. More specifically, it has been going on like this.
bofoddity: (Default)
Books with homosexual characters are being excluded from Amazon's best seller lists. 'CAUSE HOMOSEXUALITY IS JUST SO PERVERSE AND ADULT YOU KNOW.

More here and here.

I swear, if I hear about gays having it easy one more time..

eta: A couple of more useful links:

#AmazonFail at Twitter.

A petition.

Transgender bios and non-fiction books about any non-standard sexuality are also being excluded.

I discovered this post earlier today, and.. well, it made me upset. And angry that there was a need for it to be written, because it shouldn't be the people on the receiving side of shit that who to adapt. It goes with how the one who's being stepped is always the one who needs to listen. "You should understand that they bully you because they're so unhappy with yourself." "You should understand how horrible it is for church that they have to let gays get married." "You should understand how horrible it is to be accused of racism." It's always the same thing. This demand for listening nicely ignores the fact that the other side is already doing it. It's kind of not a choice.

And the side that has the choice to listen or not? Usually doesn't. So let's stop with that "we need to meet each other the half-way" crap. (You first.)

So there has been more race fail going on (short summary: published authors wanked, [livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink was reasonable, published authors decided to punish her for that, more here). The main issue these people have now is that some bloggers prefer to use pseudonyms instead of their real names, because apparently wanting to protect your privacy is actually an act of cowardice. Or about making yourself a non-person, as one wanker seems to indicate:

Much has apparently been made of my posting her real name in my demand for an apology. But is was not a pseudonym that wrote the lie for which an apology is needed. It was a real live person who has a body and a name. And that is who needs to apologize.

(Full post here to be gawked at. It's special.)

Except who is actually being dehumanized here? The threats and demands for silence come from the big, known names, not from those who use pseudonyms; it's these people who use their influence in order to smear reputations of others and endanger them to harm. Look at that post I linked after the quote: who is making demands here? Who started the hostility again?

It's funny to watch these people demand responsibility from others while blissfully ignoring their own shit, only it's really not. It's not nice to see bullies get to be entitled, arrogant and threatening and get away with their behavior without even a slap on the wrist from their own community. It's not nice to see that these adults, these professionals actually take pride in getting to ignore concerns voiced by their fellow writers, readers and everybody else who aren't willing to tiptoe around them. Are they honestly incapable of seeing their own hatefulness? If they are, it would be nice to get to live in their bubble.

I don't have personal experience with anybody involved with this, but it's easy for me to see which side has decided to be a martyr. It's easy to be one when you have decided to be the one to call the shots, and that the other side is just a target.

Dear 2008,

Nobody wanted the fail sequel.

Short but serious LJ-linkspam )

And so that this isn't all depresso and I'm late to most cool stuff, a general link rec: creepypasta.com is a neat site with micro horror fiction. The quality varies, but there are some really creepy pieces around.

A motion has been filed in order to invalidate the gay marriages that took place before Proposition 8 passed.

I tried to form coherent thought, but in the end it went down to this: There is no other reason for taking rights away from people who already legally used them than pure and simple bigotry. I can't believe this world right now.

Two men were beaten and arrested in a peaceful protest against Prop 8.

Just in case those gays didn't get the point, you know..

I'd like this hellish year to end already.
