Coming Outs and TV

Apparently the Easter week is good for coming out, which is why both Ricky Martin and Anna Paquin decided to do it. As somebody who loves both of them (happy non-angsty music! Sookie and Rogue!) I have two things to say:
1) Congrats!
2) People who think both coming-outs were pointless can shut it.
There have been a lot of comments about how Ricky's coming-out doesn't matter because 1) everybody knew already LOL!!!11 2) he doesn't have much of a career in US anymore so why would anybody care 3) he should have talked about it before he was well-known and wealthy and you know, all those comments irritate me. Personally I'm glad he got to come out on his own terms and in his own time instead of being forced into doing it and no, he didn't actually owe that information to anybody. His pants, his business. As for Anna Paquin, this post puts it the best, but I'll repeat the point here: She's together with a guy so she could have gone on never saying a thing, but instead she chose to remind people that we come in different packages and that's fantastic. Also fantastic? She did it in a commercial. So kudos to both of them hot people.
Also, quick thoughts on Lost, Fringe and S4 House:
- Not the best episode ever, but it was a good reminder of how Jin/Sun has always been the romantic end-game of Lost for me. Sawyer/Jack/Kate? Couldn't care less of a shit. Charlie/Claire? Cute, but Charlie's death made broke my heart solely because it was about Charlie dying, not because Charlie and Claire would never be together again. Desmond/Penny? Epic, but as happy as I was to see them finally get together I didn't mind seeing Desmond get dragged to the island again. Jin/Sun STILL not getting together in this episode and possibly not ever because universe has issues? SCREW YOU LOST YOU IM OUTTA HERE
- I saw this meta post lately about how we find certain traits more acceptable in male characters than in female characters (in other words: sky is still blue), and somebody said in the comments how some Fringe-fans don't like how Olivia is special. Despite the fact that she's the main character and is getting constantly over-shadowed in special by Walter and Peter, which happened massively in this episode that is all about Peter. It was a great episode, no doubt of that, but I kept thinking about how Olivia has been sidelined in her own show lately in favor of Peter and Walter and how I don't like that very much. Hopefully it will change.
- They're airing S4 of House in Finland right now and I can't help but notice how nice Amber is. Sure, she's ruthless and screws with the others, but she's also so damn earnest and the way the others hate her seems more than a little exaggerated. Funny how a re-watch can affect things! Another thing I can't help but notice how vulnerable Thirteen is in her early episodes compared to post-Huntington's discovery episodes, which is also perfectly sensible characterization-wise, but still, a big difference. That vulnerability also makes her somewhat similar to Cameron, although not even nearly enough to call her a Cameron-clone. Thirteen is Thirteen and she rocks.
1) Congrats!

Date: 2010-04-02 07:25 pm (UTC)While I do wish at times that a major celebrity WOULD choose to come out in the height of their career and kick the issue of gay people in mainstream media into the spotlight, I totally respect that this is their private life, their decision, their career on the line. And unfortunately, it's still a huge risk. Look at Ellen; her career has never quite been the same after that. Some major actor/model came out in Korea a couple years ago, and he wound up killing himself. :/ Adam Lambert is probably never going to be asked to perform at the Superbowl. They don't owe the public or TEH GAY CAUSE anything.
I didn't know that about Anna Paquin, though. That's cool.

Date: 2010-04-03 08:11 am (UTC)This is why I'm so uncomfortable when people demand somebody to come out; like you said, being out comes with risks (and pressure; so sorry to hear about that person who committed suicide), and I can't blame people for not wanting to take those risks. It's their life, so they should get to make the choices about it.
Meanwhile I'm very happy with Anna Paquin's choice. She's engaged to a guy so she didn't "need" to say anything, but given how bisexuality is an honest myth to a lot of people it means a lot that she did.
