I heard that Ricky Martin WAS forced to come out, because the paparazzi had gotten ahold of shots/evidence that would prove it conclusively. :/ Which makes me sad, because I do agree with you, it's a person's intensely private decision to come out on their own and under their own terms -- which is why Perez Hilton outing Zachary Quinto (who was, honestly another non-surprise) pissed me off so much.
While I do wish at times that a major celebrity WOULD choose to come out in the height of their career and kick the issue of gay people in mainstream media into the spotlight, I totally respect that this is their private life, their decision, their career on the line. And unfortunately, it's still a huge risk. Look at Ellen; her career has never quite been the same after that. Some major actor/model came out in Korea a couple years ago, and he wound up killing himself. :/ Adam Lambert is probably never going to be asked to perform at the Superbowl. They don't owe the public or TEH GAY CAUSE anything.
I didn't know that about Anna Paquin, though. That's cool.
