WTF, House-fandom? Okay, House-fandom has always been a vicious place, but these days it's just ridiculous.
- WTF is it about Foreteen that inspires such hatred? Yeah yeah, you can't like every ship blah blah blah, but I don't understand what is so horrible about Foreteen that people have to complain about it ruining the show after EVERY FUCKING EPISODE?
- Not to mention how Thirteen-hatred seems to be so universal that you can barely take a step in fandom walking into a hater. Again, I can understand dislike. I can understand not giving a damn about her. But the sheer vitriol she's getting from everybody doesn't make any freaking sense. Is it so horrible to have a female character around who has a storyline that's independent of House?
- Foreman-hate seems to be on the rise too, and the comments about how gross he is are really starting to bother me. He's never been the cuddliest duckling, but he's never been OMG MONSTER either. He's just himself. WHY IS THIS A HORRIBLE THING?
- Okay, I think we can all agree that nobody in this fandom wanted Kutner to die. And that it's sad that he did. That it was pointless and cruel. But guess what? SO IS DEATH. Suicide or not, death is always a shock and it never makes sense, no matter how prepared you might be. If anything this was actually one of the most realistic deaths I've ever seen, and certainly one of the more realistic suicides. It wasn't glorious or romantic, just a senseless thing that didn't need to happen. THAT'S THE POINT OF IT.
- WTF is with the Wilson-hate?! Or actually, I do know the answer for this one since it's fucking anywhere: House and other characters like him are never and no way can ever be responsible of their own shit because they're secretly hurting and misunderstood, and it's the duty of other people to make sure that they never ever have to feel pain again about anything. After all, it's not like their friends or significant others can actually possess personalities and feelings of their very own and therefore may sometimes fail to properly worship their woobie. I should just remember these things!
- Cuddy and Huddy may not have worked for me 100 %, but the hatred for both has turned from annoying to fucking insane. Cuddy needs to stop bugging House? It's too unhot to be real? This is House we're talking about here, nobody is going to have a smooth romance with him (not even Wilson, as much as some may believe). And yeah, I would probably be more comfortable if the power balance in that relationship wasn't tipped so much in House's favor, but that's not Cuddy's fault. Like it or not, most women in the world aren't bad-asses like Sarah Connor or Ellen Ripley, and it doesn't make them evil or despicable. In fact, if not condemning somebody because they aren't ideal is such a hard thing to do then maybe you should try an attitude-check.
Just to disclaim, nobody has to like everything, criticism is okay and so on, but it's pretty damn irritating when the hate keeps popping up in supposedly neutral places and nobody even questions it. I mean, one of the nicer sides of LJ-fandom has been that open bashing is actually frowned on and questioned. Not always, of course, but pretty often. Why isn't it happening here?
And on the more confused side of WTF FANDOM:
- Why did just about 95 % of fandom assume that Taub had something to do with Kutner's death? What in his storyline suggests in any way that he would up for killing somebody, much less Kutner? WTF? What am I missing here?
So, my opinion about Simple Explanation is the following:
- Portrayal of suicide and its aftermath to the living: A +. It makes perfect sense to me that the character who kept his distance and who we never got to knew that well would be the one to take his life. That distance just happens when you're waiting to die, you know? It went straight to home.
- Foreteen: A +. The scene where Thirteen sees Kutner on the floor and how they both rushed to save him fucking broke me. Then we had Thirteen not tolerating House's crap, Foreman withdrawing for a while and the two of them holding hands at the funeral. OTP. How anybody can think this couple is the worst thing ever is beyond my comprehension.
- House: A +. He was an asshole like usual, but his reaction was realistic and true to the character and I felt for him.
- Wilson: A +. Also true to the character, and I love that Amber's fate is still so fresh to him, and that despite not being emotionally ready he still went to House. OTP.
- Cuddy: A +. I wasn't entirely comfortable with her persuading Wilson to look after House, but it's something she would do and she was kind and understanding for the whole episode.
- Cameron: A +. Old school Cameron's spirit and new school Cameron's maturity came wonderfully together in this episode and I loved her scene with House.
- Taub: A +. Just like everybody else's reactions, Taub's made perfect sense to me and I was yelling TAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUB in my heart when he broke down at the end.
So yeah. Loved the episode. Hoping Kal Penn will have a blast with his career at the White House. Will keep an eye out for post-episode fic recs. Thought the memorial site was kinda pointless, but loved the messages from other characters to Kutner.
