Amends Are Best Made Aloud
In the hospital, Barret was like cartoon caricature become true, with leg and arm in casts, frowning unhappily as Tifa and Marlene entered the room. But his face lightened up at the sight of his daughter.
"Hey, Marlene!"
"Daddy!" Marlene ran over to the bed, hugging Barret's arm as he reached down to ruffle her hair. Tifa looked at the bandage taped to his cheek, how it seemed to cut his smile short.
"Tifa," Barret said then, his eyes straying to her direction. His eyes filled with guilt at the sight of her, like they should. "I'm glad you and Marlene came over."
Sorry, his eyes pleaded, and that was almost enough to make her join Marlene by his bedside. But she crossed her arms instead.
It took a second before Barret turned to Marlene and said: "Your daddy has been very stupid lately, Marlene. He tried to save a bunch of other guys at work and ended up hurting himself."
"Silly daddy," Marlene scolded, then giggled. Tifa nodded with acceptance and began to walk towards the bed.
"Your daddy could have also called you more often before this," Barret continued, leaning over to kiss Marlene in the hair. "Sorry about that."
"It's okay." Marlene looked over at Tifa. "Right, Tifa?"
Tifa shrugged. "Well, now your daddy has a chance to make up for not calling. He needs time to recover, and he can do that at Seventh Heaven. Unless," Tifa closed the rest of the distance, sitting on the edge of the bed, "you rather stay in the hospital?"
She struggled to hide a smile when Barret shook his head. "The money isn't a problem anymore, so I can hire a nurse to look after me. You have other things to do."
"That's true." Barret went entirely still as Tifa extended her hand out, brushing her fingers briefly down the side of his bandaged cheek. "But I don't mind checking on you every once in a while."
Barret's arm made a movement, probably to return the touch, only to be aborted by the heavy cast on his arm. So he leaned his face further into Tifa's touch, looking her in the eye. "I wouldn't mind that."
This time, Tifa allowed herself a smile. Maybe a fool's heroics could have some more positive outcomes after all.
