Show thoughts

What's a good way to avoid thinking about real life? To think about everything else!

Dollhouse

Last week's episode seemed to be the one where people decided whether to stick with the show or not, but I wish it had been this week's episode because it's honestly the first episode that felt like Whedon all the way in the positive sense of the word. The cast sparked with each other, the characters sparked with each other, we found out more about the real person behind Echo, Sierra's issues weren't solved with a mindwipe, and I hated Topher slightly less than usual. If the next week's episode delivers what the promo promised, it will be even better.

Despite actually getting interested in the show, though, I still doubt whether Dollhouse is really going to kick its premise in the ass or not. Considering how many people fail to recognize rape as rape in fandom and elsewhere (in my main fandom, for example, the hero gets paired with the guy who raped his mind without any acknowledgment of how screwed up that is), I think a show that hits you in the face with the squick is necessary, but I don't think Dollhouse is this show. Especially because I can't watch one single Sierra-scene without wondering if Whedon is secretly getting off to it.

Lost

Dashed reactions to this one since it made me so incoherent.

- SAIYD.

- SAWYER/SAYID.

- BEN/SAYID.

- More about Sayid: He hasn't exactly been the luckiest character in the series when it comes to flashback episodes, but this one was a pure gem and I loved the insight we got into him. It broke my heart to see him get denied his chance to redemption, and it broke my heart to see him pull a gun on little Ben. Especially because there's no way Ben actually stays dead. SAYID.

- I hated so much that we didn't get to see more Sawyer/Juliet-awesomeness before bringing the quadrangle fully in, but I've been really happy with how they've dealt with it so far. Sawyer ditching Juliet for Kate seems like an inevitable thing, but I like that he's not doing it as soon as he can, though he's obviously curious about why she's back and where he's standing with her.

- E.B Farnum as Dharma-torturer! How can I call myself a Deadwood-fan and not recognize him immediately? I knew his face was familiar as hell, but his voice threw me completely off. Which is even more stupid because his voice is probably the most recognizable thing about him. Also, he makes a fourth Deadwood-actor to make an appearance on the show!

..and that's pretty much it. SAYID. I can only wonder how it will go from here.

Smallville

This made me slightly less incoherent, but anyway.

- So this is what it felt like to really, really love Chloe. She hasn't been one of my favorites in Smallville for a long time, but I had no trouble sympathizing and feeling for her on this one, and I had no trouble getting squee-y over Clark/Chloe-friendship again. It was a great feeling.

- My God when did Erica Durance get so good? She was the perfect Lois from the start, but the way I had absolutely no trouble being able to tell that it was Chloe in her body instead of the usual Lois was just wow. Sure, she wasn't Welling doing John Glover, but Allison Mack and Glover sort of exist in different leagues. So I was definitely impressed.

- I was also really happy to see that Oliver does in fact regret killing Lex. The idea of him as a remorseless killer was just so wrong to me, and while this episode didn't entirely make up for his horrid characterization in Requiem, it was a step up. I also loved him being a friend to Chloe and that he was able to empathize with Zatanna.

- Speaking of Zatanna, wasn't she great or what? I wasn't 100 % sold on the actress, but I was at least 98 % sold and that's pretty good.

- Clark! Clark and his obvious attraction/attachment to Lois! Welling's take on the Clark Kent the Ordinary Guy persona and the perfection of it! The sheer comedy in his performance! I like being able to go all 'eee!' over Clark too.

- I understand that Smallville is probably better off not bringing anything Batman on the show. I get that Chloe already has established background as the helper of the Justice League in this show. But assigning her as the Barbara Gordon of this show? NOT ON. This and The Dark Knight's condemning of Batman keeping an eye on the entire city as immoral (which is something that the Oracle does) smells like dissing of what Oracle is in the comics and that's, you now, unacceptable.

Not to mention the fact that it has been Lana taking that role, the fandom would be full of "Mary Sue!!!"-shrieks.

Anyway, overall a pretty good episode. Maybe they will be able to make up for Requiem after all. Except I pretty much ruined the chances of that by speculating about it aloud. ARGGH.

Supernatural

So, there's been a lot of talk about how Sam has been sidelined in this season to make more room for Dean-wangst and Castiel, and yeah, that's been annoying me too. Although I like Dean a little more than Sam, it's the Sam-Dean team that really attracts me to the show. Sam is big part of what makes Dean interesting to me and vice versa, and Dean being emo and special on his lonesome doesn't do a thing for me. Nor does Castiel; I don't hate him, but I just don't care about him or his angst at all. Uriel was more interesting, but

And this episode, boy. As far as as the Sam-Dean team went, it was all about why this show punched all of my buttons so hard in the first place, though the ending was meh. It's also kind of painful how it really didn't surprise me that they brought a non-evil white angel in to make up for an evil angel of color.

Heroes

Okay, I get that Danko isn't intended as a sympathetic guy. But God, does he have to be that much of a one-dimensional dick? He better get his comeuppance very soon.

Meanwhile, I'm still really happy that this show is good again. I love all the characters again, and while there isn't anything absolutely original about this storyline, it's interesting. I loved that Hiro finally got a chance to show that he has in fact developed as a character since S1, and the goodbye between Matt and Daphne ripped my heart out of my chest. Their romance was very tacked on, but in the end it you could truly feel for the two of them. I also felt bad about Tracy's death, even though she wasn't my biggest favorite.

Also, Micah! There were hints about him being the Rebel in canon and fandom was sure all along, but an on-screen confirmation is pretty awesome anyway. Now, when do we get to see Monica?

Hex was like a balm for me in that second half, and I adore everything about it. Thank God for Bryan Q. Miller.

I think ED and TW are very much alike in that respect -- they've truly grown as actors over the years.

Hex was the much needed beam of light. Too bad that it was followed by more head-banging.

I agree. I think ED started out a little stronger than TW, but it's amazing how good they've both become.
