I like the AUs best when they work together with the canon, so that's why I'm a sucker for good "what ifs". What's more fascinating than to see an alternative outcome to an important event! The AUs where characters are added to a real world usually don't do nothing to me, though good characterization (as in you can connect alternative versions to the originals) and setting up the "canon" would definitely help.. except most people don't bother. And more shitty soap opera is born.
